Art, Precision, and Infrastructure: Design Rationale Ltd at Farringdon Station’s Eastern Ticket Hall As part of the ambitious Crossrail programme - now proudly running as the Elizabeth Line - Farringdon Station has emerged as a shining example of infrastructure that not only functions with modern efficiency but also embodies rich artistic and architectural expression. A key figure behind this transformation is British artist Simon Periton , whose integrated artwork Spectre  adorns the Eastern Ticket Hall. Bringing this vision to life required more than artistic imagination; it demanded technical expertise, material precision, and adaptive problem-solving. This is where Design Rationale  stepped in, with Dean White  leading the design execution to deliver the full architectural metalwork and glass solutions that transformed vision into a physical, functional, and beautiful reality. A Collaborative Vision Between Art and Architecture Spectre  is not simply an overlay to an existing structure - it is deeply embedded into the architectural skin of Farringdon Station’s eastern entrance. From façade to fittings, the artwork weaves itself through the identity of the building, wrapping the structure in layers of metaphor and material design inspired by the historic ironwork of nearby Smithfield Market. To translate this complex design into built form, Design Rationale collaborated closely with trusted manufacturers. Each element - from digitally printed glass panels to bespoke metal framing - was fabricated and finished to the highest standard. Every component was engineered to reflect Periton’s detailed designs, with no detail too small to matter. All materials, from metalwork to glass, were installed to the highest quality standards, including integrated security features. Dean White: Leading Design with Purpose At the heart of this delivery was Dean White , lead designer at Design Rationale for the Eastern Ticket Hall. He not only oversaw the architectural detailing but also worked hands-on with fabricators, installation teams, and client stakeholders to ensure Periton’s vision for Spectre  was both respected and precisely executed. One of the most impressive and iconic features - the great sliding gate at the entrance - exemplifies the fusion of art and architecture. Carefully designed to align with the Spectre  aesthetic, it acts as both a security mechanism and an artistic gesture, reflecting the station’s unique character. Dean’s leadership was especially critical during the construction finishing phase, when on-site design adjustments and real-time problem-solving were essential. As changes unfolded during the build process, he ensured that the design intent remained intact, accommodating refinements without compromise. Reflecting on the outcome, Dean White notes: “I’m very proud of how the design finished. We made sure every change enhanced the final product without losing what made it special.” Spectre  in Glass: A Meticulous Installation Bringing Spectre  to life required a medium that could match its ambition. The central canvas was digitally printed artwork on architectural glass - a delicate, high-spec process requiring absolute precision. Design Rationale ensured the printing, framing, and mounting of each panel was carried out under rigorous quality control. Patterns were aligned seamlessly, and each piece was designed for durability in the high-traffic station environment. By Design Rationale - Experts in Glass, Metalwork & Architectural Contracting Farringdon Station is more than just a transport hub – it’s a historic landmark and an architectural statement in the heart of London. Nestled at the meeting point of the City of London, Clerkenwell, and Farringdon, it marks the location of the world’s very first underground metro line, launched in 1863 by the Metropolitan Railway. This legacy laid the foundation for one of London’s most ambitious upgrades: the Crossrail project and the transformation of Farringdon Station into a 21st-century interchange. Our Role at Design Rationale  At Design Rationale, we were proud to contribute our expertise in architectural glass and metalwork to this monumental transformation. Our work helped shape a station that not only functions with modern efficiency but also reflects the area’s rich cultural heritage. We were responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation  of bespoke metalwork and cladding systems - all tailored to blend durability with design excellence. Blending Art and Architecture In collaboration with renowned artist Simon Periton , we helped bring his concept to life - using diamond-printed security glass and metal cladding that referenced the historic craftwork of Hatton Garden , London’s jewellery and metalsmithing district. The striking “ Spectre ” and “ Avalanche ” designs weren’t just decorative. They symbolised the meeting of past and future, blending Farringdon’s industrial roots with the forward-thinking vision of Crossrail. Design That Withstands Time Functionality was at the heart of this project. Our scope included: Blast and safety-rated glass systems Structurally integrated metalwork Custom cladding with exacting finish levels Precision installation in high-footfall areas Every detail was engineered for resilience without compromising on visual impact. Digital Integration: Form Meets Function Beyond physical finishes, we also designed and installed a network of integrated media screens  throughout the station. These systems provide real-time updates and enrich the passenger experience - all while blending into the station’s clean, architectural flow. Collaborative Leadership Our contribution was shaped by teamwork: Joe Bailey  led the design of the Western Ticket Hall Dean White  oversaw part-design and full installation of the Eastern Ticket Hall’s  metal and glass finishes Every piece of security glass was individually printed to reflect Simon Periton’s art, with meticulous execution throughout. A Lasting Legacy Situated near Smithfield Market  and St. John’s Gate , Farringdon Station now stands as a junction between history and innovation - a space shaped by its past and future. Tottenham Court Road Station is more than just a busy stop on the Underground - it’s home to one of London’s most celebrated public art installations. As part of the station’s wider renovation, Design Rationale was proud to play a key role in preserving and enhancing this cultural landmark. At the heart of the project was the iconic mosaic work by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, created in 1986. Our team was entrusted with the delicate task of renovating the architectural glass and metalwork throughout the station - with a particular focus on the rotunda that surrounds Paolozzi’s famed commuter mosaic. Specialist Glass, Metalwork, and Cladding Solutions As experts in high-performance architectural finishes, we were appointed to deliver bespoke solutions that demanded precision, technical skill, and respect for the original artistry. Our scope included: Restoration and installation of architectural glass panels Bespoke metalwork throughout the station Custom cladding of the rotunda surrounding Paolozzi’s mosaic The rotunda cladding was a key element of the project. It had to match the scale and spirit of Paolozzi’s bold visual language while providing durability, easy maintenance, and a clean, modern finish. Working in a Live, High-Traffic Environment Tottenham Court Road Station is one of London’s busiest Underground stations, making site logistics and precision timing essential. All work was carried out with minimal disruption, and every detail was carefully planned to align with the station’s tight operational schedule. The visual and cultural importance of Paolozzi’s mosaics also meant that any architectural interventions had to be carried out with absolute respect for the artist’s legacy - enhancing the space without ever overshadowing it. Craftsmanship Meets Cultural Preservation The success of the project came down to collaboration. We worked closely with our trusted manufacturers and suppliers to develop a bespoke cladding system that could follow the rotunda’s curved geometry while meeting stringent safety and longevity standards. Every component was custom-made and meticulously installed - a testament to the craftsmanship and care that defines our work. A Lasting Contribution to London’s Underground This project remains a proud moment for Design Rationale. In the heart of London’s bustling Tottenham Court Road Underground Station lies Diamonds & Circles - a permanent public art installation by renowned French artist Daniel Buren. The work is a striking composition of colour and geometry that transforms the underground space into something extraordinary. Design Rationale transformed  Buren’s vision into a physical reality. Completed in 2017, this project pushed the boundaries of how art can be integrated within public infrastructure - and remains one of our most visually captivating achievements to date. Working closely with our trusted manufacturers and collaborators, we translated Buren’s abstract concept into hundreds of individual coloured glass panels, carefully arranged across the station’s walls. Stainless steel framing added both structural integrity and a clean finish to the vibrant installation. “Working on the Tottenham Court Road upgrade was about producing an artist’s vision across hundreds of individual glass panels,” says Joe Bailey, Design Lead. “Each panel was individually drawn, and only once installed could we truly see the artwork ‘knit’ together - bringing the full vision to life.” The result? A geometric spectacle that brightens one of London’s busiest transport hubs, seamlessly marrying creativity with durability. Materials were meticulously chosen to meet London Underground’s strict safety standards - ensuring the glass remains both secure and spectacular under the pressures of daily public use. Mark Hitchcock, our Project Manager, still looks back on the project with pride: “I’m really happy with how it turned out. Even today, it remains one of my favourite stations to walk through.” Beyond its visual appeal, Diamonds and Circles  highlights what we do best: delivering technically complex, design-led architectural features that stand the test of time. We’re proud to share that Design Rationale has successfully achieved Acclaim's Accreditation for Health & Safety, certified on 24th March 2025 and valid through to 24th March 2026. The Acclaim Accreditation is part of the SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) framework and is backed by UKAS inspection. It demonstrates that our health and safety procedures meet rigorous industry standards and UK legislative requirements. This certification is a key indicator of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and compliant working environment across all of our projects. We’re proud to share that one of our key partners, Mace, has officially achieved a major safety milestone at Heathrow Airport: one full year without a single RIDDOR incident. As part of the supply chain working across the airport’s ongoing projects, Design Rationale is thrilled to be part of this remarkable achievement. Over the past 12 months, more than 1.5 million man-hours have been safely completed across a day and night workforce, with activity taking place almost every weekend. The scale of work has grown significantly, with the number of operatives more than doubling - from 400 to nearly 900 - and over 100 new Mace staff joining the effort. Despite the challenges that come with such rapid growth, this team-wide commitment to health, safety, and wellbeing has remained front and centre. Mace will be recognising this accomplishment with a workforce stand-down event at the Renaissance to thank everyone involved for their continued dedication to safety. That’s why we were proud to participate in a recent Wellbeing Cabin  initiative hosted by Fit for Work at a Wates Group project site in Westminster. The Wellbeing Cabin served as an interactive space where management and tradespeople could come together to connect, take a breather, and discuss important topics like mental health. With activities like a basketball competition and insightful happiness surveys, the event fostered openness and dialogue, strengthening the bond among the on-site workforce. We’re inspired by how the Wellbeing Cabin brought a diverse group of people together, providing a platform for meaningful conversations and support. The insights gathered from the happiness surveys will undoubtedly help drive positive change across the industry, and we’re excited to see the impact of this forward-thinking approach. We’re excited to share some great news from our team at Design Rationale! Kostadin Terziyski (Kos) has been awarded the Quality Award  for November 2024 by Mace for his work on the 39665 T3 CSA Main Works  project. The award recognizes Kos’s proactive approach to managing BIM 360 signoffs and his efforts in chasing approvals with Mace managers to keep things moving smoothly. His attention to detail and persistence have played a big part in ensuring the project maintains its high standards.
